Over six thousand kilometers by train, nearly a thousand by ship, ascending from southwest to northeast to Helsinki, and then descending from northeast to southwest, finally returning to Rome. A journey that in fourteen days touched twelve European cities, ten nations, through which we sought to document, through an analysis that, given the limited time, could not be reasoned, the places, colors, moods, sensations, and priorities of the people, not only of European origin, who inhabit those cities. We will then discover that in Lithuania, in Vilnius, the city’s public buses run with the sign “Vilnius ♥ Ukraine,” and that in Turku, as in Helsinki, at nine o’clock in the evening, despite it being almost broad daylight in summer, it is rare to encounter anyone on the street. The countries visited on this journey are all full members of the European Union, but the photographs in this reportage tell us that, despite belonging to a single physical, economic, and political “place,” strong differences persist. So do conflicting feelings about common themes.
